The challenge of a recovery oriented service
Vicki Katsifis will be speaking on three main themes
That recovery is an ongoing journey and process. It is a very unique
process that does go through some common stages in most individuals. Vicki
will speak on her own recovery journey and from the perspective of other
consumers she has interviewed who have undertaken the challenge of recovery.
She will also present on the quite divergent views in the consumer movement,
carer movement, service providers and ngo's on the very definition of
recovery. This has become quite a recent discovery and extremely relevant
for ongoing mental health reform as mental health services need to adapt and
become recovery oriented. Vicki's work with cross cultural consumers will
also provide a perspective on recovery that is not often heard.
Vicki will also reflect on what is happening in organisations , area health
services and consumer networks to adapt to the changing paradigm and
incorporate recovery into their attitudes and work practice.
Vicki has obtained inspiration from other countries in her passion for
Australia to adopt a recovery outlook and will also provide a reflection on
this.
In summary this talk has as its main outcome, to put forth a challenge to
Australian mental health services to adopt the recovery model and fully
reform mental health services and the reduction of stigma in our communities
